Functional Medicine for Weight Loss Resistance

by on 20 November, 2017

If you can’t lose weight even when eating a healthy diet, exercising and doing everything right, don’t feel disheartened.

Functional lab testing can give you the answers.

Weight loss resistance can be caused by a number of physical and/or emotional factors which over time harm your biochemistry.

And to lose weight successfully many metabolic pathways have to be working well;

• Carbohydrate, fat or protein metabolism
• Energy production
• Dopamine and serotonin production
• Insulin
• Stress hormones
• Female sex hormones
• Detoxification
• Digestion

Environmental toxins, inflammation, an imbalance in gut bacteria, emotional trauma, stress and even exercising too much can disrupt these metabolic pathways contributing to weight loss resistance.

Our aim is to repair your biochemistry but we first need to understand where the issue is, and for each person this will be different.

After years in clinic I realised there is no reliable way of identifying this without lab testing, and the lab tests explain why some of my clients had been very successful while others weren’t. As functional lab testing has become more advanced and available we now have the opportunity to use a lab-based approach to individualised programs.

One test I commonly use is the organic acids profile. Organic acids are chemical compounds excreted in the urine that are products of metabolism and show disruptions in a specific pathway.

Above is a section of the report showing carbohydrate metabolism, fat metabolism and energy production markers. As you can see this person has a major issue with energy, and if you don’t have energy everything slows down, including your ability to burn fat.

Although there is an initial cost for testing there are long-term benefits including;

• Cost of unnecessary supplements
• Addressing the cause not just symptoms
• Long-term weight management
• Improving overall health
• Disease prevention
